The Blog of Bill

Part of the Bill Social Network

Am I too late?

I have been studiously ignoring my blogs since about September. I wish I could say that I had some important project or a great spiritual journey that has kept me from posting. Nah…

I have been mucking about with computers for about 30 years now. During that time, the idea of actually playing a game on them has been a non-starter. Sure, I have spent endless hours “playing” with computers. Great fun. Trying to push the limits of many an OS, making a bizarre home network, even exploring the social networking phenomena.

I began re-reading the Lord of the Rings a few months ago. I was captivated once again by the incredible world Tolkien created. Then I finished the books. Now what?

I discovered The Lord of the Rings Online. This Massively Multiplayer Online Game really caught my interest. I began playing with every spare moment. Hmm…perhaps I better take a look at The Center for Online Addicition? But that will be for another post.

I thought I might get back into blogging. Reactivate the Bill Social Network. Then I read an article in Wired by Paul Boutin entitled Kill Your Blog. In it he rants against the growth of “professional blogs”. These blogs tend to walk over any humble amateur blogs like this one in the search engines on any given topic. He makes a good, but disappointing, point.

So, should I continue to post here? Straining for my dozen or so readers? It never was really about readership or search engine rankings, but now I feel that my words are just a personal journal. But not quite. If I was to create a real personal journal, it sure as hell would not be publicly available.

Stay tuned…or don’t. I may continue just for the hell of it. After all, a 54 year old professional can’t be just about playing an online game in this universe of the Internet. Or can he?
